What to know
A cowl or bird guard on top of the pot keeps out birds, leaves and rain while still letting smoke out. Some cowls are designed to help with down-draught on windy sites.
If a fireplace is no longer used, the chimney can be capped at the top and vented at the bottom, so it stays dry and air still moves through it. Fully sealing both ends can cause damp.
